Read and Understand OBD2 Trouble Codes

Use OBD CAN to read standard engine and emissions fault codes, check their reported status and save a diagnostic report. A compatible BLE OBD2 adapter is required and sold separately.

What a standard OBD2 scan covers

The app requests confirmed, pending and permanent codes from the vehicle’s emissions-related OBD interface. A code such as P0301 identifies a reported condition to investigate; it does not identify one failed part or prescribe a repair. Standard OBD2 does not scan every computer in a car. Warnings from supported ABS, airbag, transmission or other manufacturer-specific modules may require a vehicle-specific UDS scan.

How to read codes

  1. Park safely, switch the ignition on as required by the vehicle and plug in a compatible BLE OBD2 adapter.
  2. Open OBD CAN, sign in, connect to the adapter and choose standard OBD2 trouble-code diagnosis.
  3. Start the read. Keep the connection stable while the app requests confirmed, pending and permanent codes.
  4. Review the code and its status, then save the report before making changes. Standard OBD2 reading and clearing are free after sign-in; the adapter and vehicle connection are still needed.

A completed read with no returned codes means none were found in that request scope. It does not prove that every vehicle system is fault-free.

Interpret the result before taking action

Confirmed codes are recorded faults. Pending codes can indicate a detected condition that has not yet met the vehicle’s confirmation criteria. Permanent codes are emissions-related records that may remain until the vehicle verifies that the cause is resolved. Match the code with symptoms, service history and trustworthy repair information. Clearing a code does not repair its cause and may reset readiness monitors; some permanent records cannot be erased by a clear request.

Illustrative example: If an engine warning appears only sometimes and P0301 is shown as pending, save the report and note when it occurred. Compare the symptoms and maintenance history, then ask a technician to test likely causes. Do not replace a part from the code alone. An empty read also cannot rule out an intermittent or non-emissions fault.

You can copy the report and prepared questions in the app and paste them into a third-party AI tool or send them to a technician. OBD CAN has no in-app AI diagnosis; verify outside suggestions against service information.

Frequently asked questions

Why is a warning still on after clearing?

The cause may remain, the vehicle may not have completed its self-check, or that code may not be clearable in the current state. Diagnose the cause first.

Does “no code found” mean there is no problem?

No. It describes only the completed standard OBD2 read. Another system may need a supported vehicle-specific scan.

Can clearing be undone?

Clearing can remove useful diagnostic context and reset readiness monitors. Save the report, review the confirmation prompt and clear only when you understand the effect.
