OBD2 Acceleration Test: Record Speed and Time

Use OBD CAN to log an acceleration run from live OBD2 speed data, then review its stages and charts. It records a run; it does not certify performance.

What the acceleration test records

The test follows speed and elapsed time, and derives distance and acceleration from recorded samples. The report shows speed-stage and distance-stage results with a speed and acceleration chart. Optional engine RPM or throttle-position traces appear when the vehicle provides those standard data points. Before starting, you can set a target speed and a speed-drop stop condition. Compare runs made under similar conditions; one result is not a universal vehicle specification.

How to run a test

  1. Park safely, connect a compatible BLE OBD2 adapter, and sign in. Acceleration testing requires Premium membership.
  2. Open Acceleration Test and review the end conditions. Set a target speed if desired, and enable RPM or throttle only if the vehicle reports those values.
  3. On a closed course or other lawful, controlled test area, bring the vehicle to a complete stop. The app checks that the reported starting speed is zero before enabling Start.
  4. Tap Start, then perform the test only when the area is safe and legal. The display updates as speed samples arrive. Tap Stop when appropriate, or let an enabled end condition finish the run.
  5. Review the result report and charts. A run interrupted by a lost connection may be marked as interrupted; avoid comparing it as a complete run.

Read the report with context

Stage times reflect samples returned during that session. Charts pair speed with acceleration, or with RPM or throttle when enabled. Adapter response, vehicle PID support, road, grade, load, tires and weather affect comparisons. Close unneeded data streams to reduce competing adapter requests. Never test on public roads or in a way that risks others.

Illustrative example: compare two controlled runs

Suppose a driver wonders whether a vehicle feels slower after carrying a heavy load. In a closed test area, they use the same setup and target speed for two runs under similar conditions. They compare stage times, curve shapes and whether each record is complete. If results differ, repeat consistently or ask a technician to inspect the vehicle. The report cannot identify a mechanical cause; slope, weather, tires, load and OBD sampling can change results.

Compatibility and membership

A compatible BLE OBD2 adapter and supported standard speed data are required. RPM and throttle charts depend on vehicle support. Sign-in and Premium membership are required. OBD samples are estimates, not calibrated timing or dynamometer measurements, a performance guarantee or a safety assessment.

Frequently asked questions

Why does Start require the vehicle to be stopped?

The app requires a zero speed reading before recording. If speed is missing or nonzero, it will not start.

Why are RPM or throttle values missing?

They depend on the vehicle ECU and adapter. Unsupported optional readings are hidden or disabled.

Can I use this to race on a public road?

No. Use a lawful, closed or controlled area and follow local rules. The feature does not encourage road racing.
