Track Fuel Consumption with OBD2 Data
Record a driving session with the fuel and engine information your vehicle can provide, then review the result with its source and inputs in view.
What a fuel session can contain
OBD CAN can show idle fuel rate, instant and average consumption, fuel used, and distance travelled. The app checks fuel type and available standard OBD2 data. It prefers a valid vehicle-reported fuel rate when the ECU provides one. Depending on the available readings, a supported estimate can use mass airflow, or manifold pressure together with engine speed, intake temperature, engine displacement, and volumetric-efficiency settings. The chosen source and relevant readings are included in the saved record and CSV so the result can be interpreted in context.
These figures are vehicle-data-based outputs, not a calibrated fuel meter or a promise of real-world accuracy. Some vehicles do not provide the needed signals; estimates also depend on correct displacement, fuel type, and volumetric-efficiency settings. The app may mark a calculation incomplete, unavailable, or interrupted when inputs are missing or the connection ends.
Start and finish a recording
- Sign in, open Fuel Consumption Tracking, and connect a compatible BLE OBD2 adapter to the vehicle.
- Check the engine displacement and volumetric-efficiency values in Basic Parameters. Choose a quick naturally aspirated or turbo preset if useful, then review the values against your vehicle specifications.
- Start recording. The app checks relevant fuel and sensor data. If fuel type cannot be determined and needs confirmation, choose gasoline or diesel before the session proceeds.
- Watch the live readings while the vehicle is running. Stop the session when you are finished; a disconnect can end it early and the record may be marked interrupted.
- Open the saved record to inspect its summary and available readings. Export its data as a localized CSV for spreadsheet review.
Example: compare the same commute
To explore whether a commute’s fuel trend changed, record the same route on two days with similar traffic, load, and weather. Compare the reported source, average consumption, distance, and input status in each saved record. If the calculation source or key inputs differ, investigate those settings before comparing. Even a matched route cannot prove a mechanical fault or precise pump-to-pump fuel economy; traffic and estimation limits remain.
Interpret the report
Average consumption uses accumulated fuel and distance; instant values change with vehicle conditions. Check units, calculation source, timestamps, and data status before comparing. Differences may reflect traffic, signal availability, or settings. Treat figures as estimates and verify independently when accuracy matters.
Access and privacy
Recording requires sign-in, a compatible BLE adapter, available vehicle data, and paid membership. The adapter is sold separately; iOS does not support classic Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. Fuel records are stored locally by account; saved reports do not create new readings or imply cloud-synchronized history.
Frequently asked questions
Why is fuel consumption unavailable?
The vehicle, fuel type, or selected calculation method may not provide valid input signals. Check the report status, settings, and adapter connection.
Does it measure fuel at the pump?
No. It reports ECU data or estimates, not fuel dispensed.
