OBD Mode 05 Oxygen Sensor Test Results
Mode 05 reads ECU-reported oxygen sensor test results. OBD CAN queries supported Mode 05 identifiers and reads available values such as voltage thresholds or response times. This differs from the live Oxygen Sensor Waveform, which samples current sensor PIDs.
What the ECU may return
Mode 05 items vary by vehicle. Recognized identifiers appear with sensor and bank labels. Selected values are converted to volts or seconds; others may remain raw. Support and naming differ. The screen does not chart live data, force a sensor test or include every possible test.
How to read Mode 05 data
- Connect a compatible OBD-II Bluetooth adapter, sign in and open the OBD2 Oxygen Sensor Monitor. Mode 05 reading requires Premium membership.
- Tap Read Oxygen Sensor Info. OBD CAN initializes the adapter, queries ECU support and requests supported test items.
- Review each returned item and its sensor/bank label. Voltage tests may describe thresholds, offsets, minimum or maximum voltage; timing tests may show response or switch-cycle time.
- Use refresh to query the ECU again, or copy/export the report for a repair discussion. Completed readings are saved in local diagnostic history.
Illustrative example: review an oxygen sensor concern
Suppose a vehicle has an oxygen-sensor code. The owner reads Mode 05, notes which bank and test IDs returned voltage or response-time values, and shares them with a technician for comparison with service data. If no items appear, check ECU support and connection before retrying. A returned value cannot alone prove a sensor is defective, show its current behavior or establish catalyst efficiency.
Compatibility and interpretation limits
Results depend on ECU support, adapter communication and completed monitor data. A vehicle may return some readings or none. Missing or partial data does not mean a sensor passed or failed. Mode 05 is not Mode 01 readiness and does not predict an inspection. Sign-in and Premium membership are required.
Frequently asked questions
Does Mode 05 show a live oxygen waveform?
No. It reads ECU-reported test values. Use the separate screen for supported live Mode 01 readings.
Why are some values raw or missing?
The ECU may not report those IDs, or the app may not have a unit conversion for the value.
Is Mode 05 the emissions readiness check?
No. Readiness is a separate OBD status and inspection precheck. Mode 05 reports oxygen sensor test values.
