Live OBD2 Oxygen Sensor Waveform

OBD CAN's Oxygen Sensor Waveform screen reads live sensor voltage PIDs while the engine runs. It plots available upstream and downstream narrowband readings so you can observe voltage movement. It is a screening aid; a trace alone cannot confirm a failed sensor or catalytic converter.

What appears on screen

When supported, the view shows front and rear voltage, waveform, sample count and duration. For a narrowband front sensor, the report adds minimum, maximum, average voltage and threshold-crossing count. Status labels are pattern-based prompts, not manufacturer specifications. A wideband upstream sensor is not plotted as a traditional voltage waveform; if available, only the rear reading can appear.

How to run the live check

  1. Connect a compatible OBD-II Bluetooth adapter, sign in and open the feature. Premium membership is required.
  2. Warm the engine and wait for closed loop as suggested. Keep the vehicle safely stationary and connected.
  3. Tap Start Test. The app checks closed loop and queries sensor data; without usable O2 readings, it cannot start.
  4. Watch the 30-second trace or stop manually. A disconnect may leave a partial report.
  5. Review the chart and summary. Completed runs are saved in local diagnostic history.

Illustrative example: inspect a switching concern

Suppose an owner investigating an engine warning wants to see whether a supported narrowband upstream signal changes during warm operation. They wait for closed loop, record a waveform and review voltage range and cross count, then compare downstream data if present. If unusual, share it with a technician alongside related codes and wiring checks. The chart cannot identify the cause or decide that a sensor or catalyst needs replacement.

Compatibility and limits

Sign-in, Premium membership, a compatible connected adapter and ECU support for requested standard OBD PIDs are required. Sensors vary by vehicle. Wait until the engine is warm and the fuel system is in closed loop; the app checks closed-loop status before sampling. Adapter response affects polling. This live Mode 01 view differs from Mode 05 and Mode 06 ECU test results.

Frequently asked questions

Is this the same as Mode 05?

No. This screen samples live standard OBD sensor PIDs. Mode 05 reads stored oxygen-sensor test values reported by the ECU.

Why is the upstream waveform missing?

The vehicle may report a wideband upstream sensor or may not support the requested PID. Traditional voltage plotting is for supported narrowband data.

Does a “normal” label prove the system is healthy?

No. It is a prompt for review. Confirm concerns with codes and professional tests.
